Turkey Thawing Time |
The Proper Thawing Time
Turkey Thawing Hints:
From the National Turkey Federation
Turkeys can be thawed using one of three methods, but the
most fool proof is in the refrigerator. The key to this
method is to plan ahead and allow approximately 24 hours
for every four to five pounds of bird weight for thawing
in the refrigerator. This method is the safest and will
result in the best finished product. Place the bird, in
the original wrapping, on a shallow baking sheet in the
refrigerator. The following chart provides good guidelines
for thawing times.
Refrigerator Turkey Thawing Time (40 degrees F)
Turkey Weight Days to Allow for Thawing Turkey
8 to 12 pounds 2 to 2.5 days
12 to 16 pounds 2.5 to 4 days
16 to 20 pounds 4 to 5 days
20 to 24 pounds 5 to 6 days |

How to disinfect a
sponge |
If you use any type of sponge in the kitchen for cleaning,
you can preserve the life of it and also disinfect it by
either placing it in the microwave for a minute, or placing
it on the top rack of the dishwasher the next time you use it. |

Caring for Stainless
Steel Sinks |
Wash with a solution of dishwashing liquid and water or baking
soda and water. Rinse and dry with a paper towel or a soft cloth.
You can brighten stainless steel by polishing with a soft cloth
that has been dipped in vinegar or ammonia, (watch the fumes and
wear gloves when using ammonia.) You can also sprinkle a little baking
soda on a sponge and gently wipe the sink, rinse and dry with a cloth
or paper towel. To give a shiny finished look, wipe baby oil on the
stainless steel with a soft cloth, then polish and dry with a soft cloth.
NEVER use steel wool or scouring powders on stainless steel...it will
scratch the sink or appliance. You can use these same cleaning tips on
your stainless steel appliances.
Again, mats on the bottom of the sink will help to prevent
scratching by pans and utensils. |
|
Stains in the sink |
Don't leave acid foods sitting on the sink surface for
long periods of time. Many porcelain-on-cast iron sinks
made before 1964 were not acid restant. Citrus fruits such
as lemons, cranberries, vinegar, salad dressings etc. could
possibly etch the sink if left on the surface for a long time.
Perforated or plastic mats can help prevent damage.
Cleaning can be done with a cleanser with a bleaching
agent in it. A "soft-scrub" type of cleaner will clean
without scratching. If you have stains that seem stubborn,
fill the sink with very hot water and add 1/4 cup bleach
to the water. Soak a few hours or overnight if possible
and rinse in the morning |

Coffee Lovers |
Coffee grinders need TLC every once in a while. If you notice
your grinder isn't doing as well as it used to, grind a cup or
two of rice in the coffee grinder. This will not only clean
the grinder blades, but sharpen them as well |
|
What about the
Dishwasher? |
Keeping your dishes and dishwasher smelling fresh....
Deodorize dishes, pans, cutting boards or utensils from
awful odors by adding 1/4 cup of lemon juice to your
dishwater.
To clean mineral deposits from the inside of your dish-
washer, pour in a container of TangŪ Drink Mix and run
the dishwasher (don't put dishes in the dishwasher for
this load). Just run the cycle. |
