GRADE 2 MATH
Day 1: Have your child count by one in the hundreds. (101, 102, 103, etc.). Day 3: Have your child count backward and forward from any number. Day 4: Dictate three digit numbers and have your child write them. Day 5: Have your child read three digit numbers. Day 6: Make different arrangements of $1 bills, dimes, nickels and pennies up to $10.00. Have them say and write the amounts. Day 7: Write two and three digit numbers and have your child say or write how many hundred, tens and ones are in the number. Day 8: Write two and three digit numbers and have your child say or write the digit in the hundreds, tens, and ones place. Day 9: Propose a purchase of an item for a certain amount (i.e. for 68 cents). Have your child say what coins she would use; how many quarters, dimes, nickles and pennies? Day 10: Propose a purchase, (for .50). You child pays with $1.00. How much change would he get? Day 11: Have your child write specific times (i.e 10:15, 3:05, etc.). Day 12: Purchase a clock stamp and have your child draw the hands for specific times. Day 13: Have your child add 30+ 60 = ? (90), 50 + 20 = ? (70), 70 + 20 = ? (70); hint- count by tens. Day 14: Have your child subtract 70 - 20 = ? (50), 50 - 10 = ? (40), 120 -40 = ? (80)(Hint: count by tens). Day 15: Have your child read a thermometer at a specific time. Have them read it again a couple of hours later. Have them compare and find the difference in temperature. Day 16: Have your child name things that have symmetry. (a pine tree, letter H, a square, etc.). Day 17: Have your child estimate numbers to the nearest tens. (i.e. 46 is closest to 50, 61 is closest to 60 etc.) Estimate to the nearest dollar. (i.e. .71 cents is closest to $1.00; $1.88 is closest to $2.00 etc.). Day 18: Discuss a multiplication problem: There are 3 weeks, 7 days in a week. How many days are there? (21). Hint; Draw a picture. Day 19: Discuss a multiplication problem: There are 4 rows of tiles, 8 tiles in each row. How many tiles are there? Hint: Draw a picture. (32). Day 20: Discuss an subtraction problem: There are 7 nuts. Squirrels took 3 of them. How many are left? (4 nuts). Day 21: Discuss another type subtraction problem: Susan read 25 pages. Her brother read 12 pages. How many more pages did Susan read? (13). Hint; count back by 1 ten and 2 ones. Day 23: Discuss money: You have 3 quarters, 2 dime, 1 nickle, and 1 penny. How much in all? ($1.01). Day 24: Have your child tell you how many times is double, triple and quadruple. Day 25: Have your child fold a table napkin or a piece of paper in half, thirds and fourths. Color 1 part and 2 parts and ask what fraction is colored and what fraction is not. Day 26: Have your child measure the perimeter (outer edges) of a book or magazine and tell you the total measurement in centimeters and in inches. Day 27: Have your child write five dollars, forty five cents, two dollars and thirty nine cents, and seven cents using decimals and dollar signs. Day 28: Have your child write three fifteen, seven forty five , four thirty, ten fifty etc. in clock time. Day 29: Have your child tell the position of the little hand and large hand at 2:45, 6:15, 1:30, 12:00 etc. Day 30: Have your child manage the function buttons on the calculator, addition, subtraction, equal, etc.
Day 1: Teach your child a new card game (old maid, fish, etc.). Day 2: Have your child write five words that rhyme with cat, hot, let. Day 3: Have your child use the cat words to write a poem. Day 4: Have your child write a letter to a friend and mail it. Day 5: Go to a restaurant. How many items on the menu can your child read? Day 6: Have your child write five words that begin with "bl", "sm", and "tr". Day 7: Have your child write the names of rides in an amusement park. Day 8: Have your child follow directions to a recipe (jello, etc.) Day 9: Have your child draw a picture and write a story about it. Day 10: Have your child read five store signs. Day 11: Have your child write about the story in a favorite video and change the ending. Day 12: Have your child change the last letter and make new words out of Sam, bat, and him. Day 13: Have your child write the words one to ten and further if possible. Day 14: Have your child make a book using pictures with the number words. Day 15: Have your child write the name of five fruits. Day 16: Have your child write 5 words that begin with "ch", "wh", "sh", and "th". Day 17: Have your child write 5 words that rhyme with kid, top, and ten. Day 18: Have your child read an animal story. Day 19: Have your child tell how these words are different; to, too, two. Day 20: Have your child tell how these are different; ate-eight. Day 21: Have your child write the name of 5 vegetables. Day 22: Have your child write the opposite; some, white, many, all, off. Write a story with those words. Day 23: Show your child a picture and take it away. Have her talk about some things she saw in it. Day 24: Have your child learn a poem by heart. Day 25: Have your child keep a summer diary. Day 26: Have your child look at a newspaper and pick out a character in the funnies. Have him write a short story about the character. Day 27: Have your child write the alphabet. Write a word for each letter. Day 28: Have your child cut pictures of a comic strip and put them back in order. Day 29: Read a family fun page in the newspaper. Day 30: Take your child to the zoo or farm and have her write about the experience. |
